Before you press

  • Set the volume to maximum and unplug headphones or Bluetooth speakers.
  • Take the phone out of its case so water has a way out.
  • Hold it with the bottom speaker facing the floor.
  • Keep it away from your ear. The tone is loud.

How to eject water from your phone

  1. Dry the outside

Wipe the phone with a soft, lint-free cloth and remove the case.

  2. Turn the volume up

Use the side buttons until the volume is at maximum.

  3. Point the speaker down

Gravity helps the drops fall out instead of moving deeper.

  4. Press Eject water

Let the tone play to the end, then gently shake the phone.

  5. Repeat if needed

Two or three runs are usually enough. Stop when the sound is clear.

Which sound should I use?

Tone

165 Hz

A steady 165 Hz tone. Start here, it works well for most phones.

Sweep

120 to 300 Hz

Slides between 120 and 300 Hz, so it passes through the frequency your speaker reacts to most. Try it if Tone did not fully clear the sound.

Pulse

Short bursts

Short bursts of the 165 Hz tone. The stop and start gives drops an extra push.

Custom

Pick a tone

Choose any tone from 60 to 500 Hz. Lower tones move the speaker more, but very small speakers may not play the lowest ones.

Why a low tone pushes water out

Your phone speaker is a thin membrane that moves back and forth to make sound. Low tones make it travel further with each movement than high tones do. When water sits on the speaker grille, those large, fast movements push air through the tiny holes and shake the drops loose, so they can fall out. It is the same idea as the Water Lock feature on Apple Watch, which plays a sound to clear its speaker after swimming.

When the tone is not enough

Water Ejector clears water from the speaker grille. It cannot dry water inside the phone. If the phone shows a liquid warning, the screen flickers, it will not charge or there is no sound at all, turn it off, let it dry with the ports facing down for at least a day, and contact the manufacturer or a repair shop.

What makes it worse

  • Rice

It does not dry a phone faster, and rice dust can get into the ports. Apple advises against it.

  • Heat

Hair dryers, ovens and radiators can damage the battery and the seals.

  • Cotton swabs and paper

They push water and fibres further into the speaker or port.

  • Compressed air

It can force water deeper inside.

  • Charging while wet

Wait until the charging port is completely dry.

Questions people ask

Does the water eject sound really work?

Yes, for water sitting in the speaker grille. The low tone makes the speaker cone move a lot, and that movement pushes droplets out through the holes. It cannot reach water that got inside the phone itself.

What frequency does Water Ejector use?

The default is 165 Hz, a low tone that makes most phone speakers move strongly. You can also try Sweep, which moves between 120 and 300 Hz, or set any frequency from 60 to 500 Hz with Custom.

How many times should I run it?

Run it two or three times, gently shaking the phone with the speaker facing down between runs. Stop when the sound is clear again.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It runs in Safari, Chrome and other modern browsers on iPhone, iPad and Android, with no app to install. Turn the volume all the way up first.

Why is there no sound on my iPhone?

Check that the volume is up and that no headphones or Bluetooth speakers are connected. The tone is played as normal media audio, so it should play even when the silent switch is on.

Can it clean the earpiece speaker at the top?

Browsers play sound through the main speaker, so the tool works best on the bottom speaker. Holding the phone with the earpiece facing down while it plays can still help a little.

Is it safe for my phone?

Playing a tone at full volume for a minute is the same as playing loud music, which phones are built for. Do not hold the phone against your ear while it plays.

Should I put my phone in rice?

No. Apple advises against it, and rice dust can get into the ports. Let the phone dry in open air with the ports facing down instead.
